View Full Version : Insurance costs confusing...
Simple question, 17 years old soon, getting vehicle asap.
Scooter, Bike, or Car.
I'd like to know what variables there are on cost. (NOTE: UK NOT US)
Scooter: 125 cc, both manual or auto if it matters.
Bike: 250 cc, trials/old commuter
Car: 1200/2000 cc, small saxo, 306, 206, etc...
Remember, for when I'm 17.

Unless you have a good job (or a low wage job and you're prepared to spend ALL your wages on it) then you cannot afford a car. The Insurance at 17 will more then likely be at least £1000 and you'll probably end up paying hundreds per month on Petrol, Tax and other expenses.
A bike is more efficient and will cost less. You'll need to have a job to be able to afford one. It's a bit more expensive then a Scooter but less then a car.
A scooter/moped is very cheap (in comparison). You could spend as little as a few pounds a week on Petrol if you don't use it that much. However the insurance will still run into a few hundred pounds a year since you're 17. I've heard rumours of it nearing a thousand but I find that hard to believe.
Ty Crazy.
I got insurance money already and a bit over, about 200.
Say job for 250 a week, work 7 weeks and I'd have 1750. enough for car and petrol for a while.
And if you choose the right insurance firm, the no claims on your bike/moped should be taken into account if/when you move on to a car, which will help lower the cost of that. My fully comp insurance on my car is £2000 or something, and that's only a 1.2 Fiesta.
Getting a car at 17 is painful, getting a moped and you would get mocked. Also I am asuming you are going to have to pay for driving lessons for you to be able to get a car anyway? That runs into big amounts these days.
Advice: Find yourself a bitch or 2 that can transport you around.
Start out with a piece of shit, and the insurance shouldn't kill you. Then upgrade when you've gone a couple of years with no claims. Most people do this I think, it's like an inalienable right.

I've been almost 3 years without any type of accident. My parents haven't paid for shit, I worked a shitty ass job and bought a $11,000 truck, been paying that off for awhile, still got a few years left to go on it.
Define peice of shit.
A car that's almost as old as you are and was never that good in the first place. One of my mates has a car he bought for £350 2 years ago and it's a fucking disgrace. A bit like him.
I can probs get a 306 or saxo for little over 1000.
Well find out what the insurance is before you buy it. I suppose a grand or under is fine for the actual car as long as you're not getting caned on the insurance.
get a bike if you have rideable weather year round.
motorcycle insurance where I live is fucking retarded though, 4 years ago it was 1300$ for just the 5 months of riding season on our shitty ass roads, now it's 2k. Our insurance company fucks us over huge though it's a public insurance company owned by the government. Good because you know when you're driving everybody is covered by the same company, bad because they can price the insurance at whatever the fuck they want and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Private insurance like in ontario where ZS lives is good because you can shop around at different rates, but bad because if faggots drive around without insurance you have to sue them and get big legal headaches.
Insurance should be about 1k or so afaik, where do you reccomend I look?
Thanks for posts.
How much cheaper will Bike insurance (in the UK) be for a 17 yr old, 125cc bike?
per month or for year.

I find that line absolutely hilarious for some reason
Seriously www.confused.com
forget a bike if your under 25 in the uk :) the premiums are stacked like 2x higher than cars
Like nish said, buy a low litre'd pile of shite build up a year or two no claims and along with your age then you'll be able to get somethin a little nicer. 17 is an awful age to buy a car.

What the fuck ?? You pay 2000 pounds / year for fully coverage insurance on a fiesta ???
I got a diesel brand new Fiat GrandPunto 1.3 and i pay 630 euros a year. IF i wreck him they give me back the full amount of 20.000 euros which was what the car cost.
holy fuck, a thread talking about mopeds and fiats.
1/10

if you start biking early you'll probably save time in the long run
my buddy i work with has been biking since he was 17, now 28, and he only pays $900/year for full insurance on his R6....which is cheap.
another buddy of mine just got a suzuki 500, is 26 and is paying over $2500/year beacuse hes a new biker.....
if you can, leech off your parents. thats what i did when i got my z24 back in 2000, i was a "secondary" driver even though my brother/mom couldn't drive stick and my dads back was bad so he didn't like getting into small cars...costed me $400/year, yay. did that for about 4 years from 17-21 before getting my car ownershiped signed over to me and getting my own insurance, saved a ton of money and personal insurance was fairly cheap for me at that point because I had been on the road with a full license for over 3 years
i definately suggest parent sack leeching
