Well I've got the latest drivers for my 8800 GTX on Vista 64 with no problems whatsoever. I'd try loading in safe mode and installing older drivers.

People can say Vista is crap all they want, but I count it as fairly valuable to be immune to memory leaks (*waves at AoC*) and be able to run in DX10 where provided.

If you are going to install Vista, go with the 32bit version not 64bit. To my knowledge there still aren't many games that run on 64bit. You can get all the goodness of Vista in 32 and still play any games you have always played.

169.25 is the last version I appear to have installed, as thats what I've got saved in my downloads folder other than the latest one.

Like what? I've got Crysis, CoD4, UT3, C&C 3, Civ 4, STALKER and AoE 3 installed and running fine, along with AoC and WoW. I've not come across a game I own that doesn't work either. Unless you are differentiating between "working" and "fully utilising", in which case no, not that many games take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture. Not an issue for me though, as this rig was built with programming also in mind.

Well, I know quite a few games that do work in 64bit; right now all my Steam games and Planetside, plus BF2 work in 64bit Vista.

However some things can be picky about it; theres this service I subscribe to here called "GameTap" and you pay $10 a month to download and play various games, from all the way back to Amiga games to as far forward as Windows games like Crysis. Its great, however it won't let me install most of the games because I have a 64bit operating system.

Probably something I could work around, but I mean, if I had XP installed or at least 32bit Vista (and I've been trying hardcore to do either with no luck) then I would have zero problems, and almost certainly more memory to spare to enhance the framerates in those games.

Honestly right now I don't see a purpose to 64bit Windows, the only program that I've seen that utilizes 64bit was SETI@home or something; i.e. something I'm not going to use a lot, or get a whole lot of enjoyment out of.

Do you have 64bit Vista? What do you think of it?

Well if that service is a program installed on your PC that you buy stuff through then its possible the reason it won't let you do it is because their service isn't 64 bit and therefore it won't work. That's the only idea I have for that, especially as Crysis works fine for me on practically max settings.

More memory to spare? Vista uses SuperFetch to cache frequently used programs so that they load faster, hence it stating you've got no free memory. I don't have any memory issues at all (even when I had 2GB, now I'm on 4) and loading things is faster than when I do it on my 32-bit XP box. Vista is also practically immune to memory leaks due to SuperFetch, which is bloody useful (I found this through being in the closed beta for AoC where anyone not on Vista had to reboot every hour or so).

Nothing wrong with it, after getting all my drivers working etc I don't have any problems with it at all and really can't see why so many people complain about it. A lot of problems with Vista are from people trying to configure it like XP or tweaking things that they shouldn't be. Runs smoothly all the time, and now that some of the main driver errors are ironed out I wouldn't see dropping down to XP as an improvement.

It does perform better with a beefier machine though, so it just depends how much you splash out really. I'd seriously recommend getting at least 4GB of RAM though.
