So... I ordered the the regular digital download version of WAR to avoid the hassle of cds/dvds (well partially because my cd drive is shot lol) and thought everything would go peachy from there. That I would receive an open beta key the day it went live and be able to try the game out a bit, and then download the game when it became available... peaches and cream... alas, I ended up with a stomach ulcer.
I actually did not receive my open beta key from EA until a day and a half after the official start of the open beta... but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
As many of you probably already know, the launch day of the open beta for europe was a complete disaster on part of GOA. I already had an account on the WAR-Europe site but come the day of the beta some genius decided to force everyone to make a new account (or maybe I'm wrong? but so I was led to believe and do), thus leading to a massive amount of users attempting to access, create and register accounts and keys... of which 99% got stuck with verification code images they had to decipher that wouldn't load, or random error messages.
Over the next few days GOA released announcements (their CEO even made a formal apology, which would perhaps have made me feel slightly better had it been written in his own blood and brain matter) stating their ineptitude and that they were managing some success, the majority being able to get through and only a small percentage of users where left in the dark...
So I try the account pages and what do you know, they still are undergoing more fits than your average retarded epileptic kid sat infront of a pokemon cartoon. So then I hear this majority is probably mostly people rolling over from the closed beta with all their shit sorted out, and the minority being those not - go figure.
Then I receive an email which states I can access a predownload of WAR... only it doesn't fucking work (brilliant software this is... ea downloader shit). I email ea about it only to receive a reply stating the headstart doesn't begin till the 15th upon which I will get a key... o_0... and the answer to the question where is the spoon is thus the bus is yellow.
On top of this whose brilliant idea was it to cram all these different terms of 'early access' into all these different packages/deals/lines with all these different keys requiring all these different accounts... for fucks sake I just want to register, type in some moronic key ONCE to play a game. Who the hell is to blame? EA? Mythic? GoA? a modern trio rivalring the comedic stupidity exhibited by Larry, Curly and Moe.
Only reason I've been able to play the game thus far is by way of using another person who was kind enough to lend me a closed beta account (and even so it took a while to get the fucking planets lined up so I could actually have a 3 second window to log in without any random problem) to have a whirl on, and from what I gathered it isn't worth the shit storm around it (multiple enemies bug out of los, escort quest involved some npc 'teleporting' behind me instead of 'walking'.., often 1 skill to spam for the first 5 levels, quite significant varying degrees of difficulty between starting areas+classes - at least from those I tried out) hopefully it will see some improvement.
For now I guess I'm going back to reading Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Worked great for me ... Downloaded it with 700 kb on 3 different computers!

Maybe its because you still only use 1 skill at lvl 5 ;)

well might not seem much to you, but add everything all up and it's enough to frustrate your average gamer with not a lot of time on his/her hands already waiting a few months to try out a hyped up game.

maybe I am, but the fact that my original account didn't seem to exist any more didn't leave me with much of a choice. Then there was the quick-fix link to a form you had to fill out to activate your key in which you had to wait for some confirmation email... which never arrived.

never played Conan, but my point remains - maybe I'm nitpicking a bit too much but I've always believed in keeping things simple.

yes they do, and not just some random obscure mob a few hours into the game, no - the mobs you encounter 2 mins into starting up the game... lol

good point, I won't go into how it affects the overall immersion then - but it made me think if that shortcut was so obvious how many others am I going to encounter.

maybe I'm getting old, but I want to play something halfway decent that doesn't require me powerleveling, grinding, farming, dedicating half my day etc to get anywhere near a sense of satisfaction.
guess WAR is out of the question for me in the meantime as registrations for the beta are closed, will have to wait for the 'early start'.. oh the anticipation is killing me -_-.

The open beta client will be patched for use with release/early start.
hmm.. dunno about that, maybe I'll have a closer look at it.
It's got a relatively steep learning curve however it's fun once you've got used to it, there's lots of different ways to play it plus you "level" without having to play so you don't miss out if you are busy. I could go on, but if you want to know more you can always ask :)

It's got a relatively steep learning curve however it's fun once you've got used to it, there's lots of different ways to play it plus you "level" without having to play so you don't miss out if you are busy. I could go on, but if you want to know more you can always ask :)
I might actually consider it if they don't delete closed accounts. Because I had a char and I'm not really happy about restarting all over again, eventhough I gave away everything I had (sadly enough I did yeah) ...
I've talked yesterday at the UK Gamesday with one of the GOA guys there and they said the bugs like the pathing one will be fixed when Headstart / Retail hits - as it's a high prio one.
Moreover, If you played only a few levels, you won't see any interesting things in terms of skill... wait till rank 10 or 11 and then you'll see much more :)

Thanks for the long post, Caras. I appreciate the time you took to write it. I'm looking for things said about the company who made Warhammer and the game itself, in order to determine whether I'm going to play it or not, and your post was an interesting slice of information. :)
The Beta is not something to go by. They have improved the gameplay aspect and although there are some areas that could use attention, imo it is so far proving to be everything I hoped it would be from WAR.
Is the gameplay fun itself?
I don't care about bugs or graphics, but if it isn't fun to play that's the deciding factor really (and should be for any game really).

Yes imo. The first few levels are a little ... boring ... if I can say that because you have one or two abillities only, but otherwise, the game itself is fun.
Yeah i'm really enjoying playing so far, level 7 at moment. The nice thing is the quantity of stuff you can do imho. Want to quest, quest, Bored of questing go do a pq or jump in the RVR queue and go do something else.
The big win for me is the fact that the RVR scenario's teleport you back to where you where when they proc'd. So if your in the middle of a quest no need to walk 30 miles to get back to it. The interface is a lot more responsive than it was in beta. One of my big worries and the bugs are minimal. Probably about the same as WOW on release. I'm very impressed with my gameplay experience thus far.

Is it mainly focussed on pvp or is the pve content also decent enough?
PVE content is fine. End game is pretty much entirely focused around PVP keep siege's ect
well, the really high-end stuff is a pve encounter, mainly the king encounter. But mainly it's focused on PvP(RvR)
well technically it's a pvp/pve encounter. Since you need to kill your way through all of the defenders to get into the instance to face the kings.

The instance's are focused mainly on 5-10 man as far as i can tell. It's not a pve centric game though like wow.
