Work done by game designer Richard Bartle in 1996 likened the different types of players to the suits in a deck of cards, said Mr Barnett.

Hearts are those that are all about socialising and grouping in guilds or on quests. Diamonds care about treasure and finding stuff in a game. Spades are all about digging deep into the lore and rules. Clubs are those that like hitting people with one.

"What WoW tends to be is a very heavy club game," he said. "It's become so big and dominant that all games go that way. "But the other suits? That's pretty much where we have gone."

By concentrating on the club-type player WoW resembled a single-player game that many people just happen to play at the same time, said Mr Barnett.

Perfect. This is probably why WAR just clicked.

I'd go along with that.

Abit harsh and utter biassed view from the writer, Avie :)

I also find it remarkable how some players seem to announce WAR to be superior to WoW and even claiming WoW is utter crap, while they played WoW for years and WAR for ... 2 weeks :)

I hope WAR is really a good game, as I intend to play it aswell at some point, but we'll see where it is in a year or 2 etc ...

Seems for game creators it's considered "cool" these days to make MMORPG's that are anti-wow and that it's considered "cool" to diss on WoW aswell.

Yeah and its cool to be anti-KJ xD

Well Kj he's exactly right, that is the kind of game WoW has turned into. I played WoW for years because there was nothing else out there, and I expect to play WAR for just as long, but actually enjoy all of my time playing it where I didn't with WoW. I'd say, in my case, that that makes WAR a superior game. Especially as already there are guilds forming on our server other than us that don't recruit elitists and are out there to have fun, which just shows that WAR is attracting the real MMO players rather than a lot of the new trash that has flooded WoW and made it an unbearable game for me. Paul Barnett is completely right about WoW being a singleplayer game that you happen to play alongside other people, because that is completely evident in how people treat each other, how stupid chat gets at time, and how often people fall back on the "well I'll just change guilds" to get what they want. We've all done it at some point, and that is not how an MMO should be played.

As for your last statement, Mythic never tried to beat WoW, and are happy being a competitive second, and have said that since day one because every interview their management has had has been asked similar questions along those lines. As for "dissing" WoW, it's called an opinion, and everyone has a right to express one. It'd be pretty boring in an interview if as soon as WoW was mentioned they refused to comment.

I can just see it, in a few years, all the capped players who only want to pvp, will start to complain that all there is to do is pvp, then people will stop playing. Then people like avoch will cry that everyone is leaving and start to try and hype every new mmo game, saying it's the "WAR Killer", hoping people will play it so he'll have something to do.

For the record, I don't play either wow or war, so I'm completely unbiased.

Love it how people get so defensive when you comment on WoW, cos like 9384398493849384934 million subscribers make it the best game ever made and its faultless.

It's more about how it's so cool and "creative" to bash WoW every time some new game comes out and a few months later, everyone's still going "yeah, I quit that game. yeah, probably gonna play WoW for a while".

I'm far from being a fan of WoW and geez, I've tried a load of other games meanwhile, but it's just silly how everyone tries to put WoW down in every possible thread. You've got to have some pretty strong connection with the game to care so much. Go play your perfect game, shoo :>

People only hate wow now because they've played it for years. I'd get tired of a game if I played it for years, I'd want something new. But since so many people are still into the game, and the bored people want something new, they have to whine about it, saying wow is crap, when in fact, a year ago they loved it and could not get enough of it. Same thing will happen with WAR, after playing it for a while, some people will want a change so they'll start to bash it, because they're babies.

I don't bash WoW. I bash the players it attracts, which is the reason I don't enjoy playing it :)

It attracted you and most people on this forum. Back when FA had a wow guild, you played non-stop. avoch, you're the type of person who likes to jump on the bandwagon, you only want to play whatever is the flavor of the month, even if you don't like it(according to you), just as long as you have people to play with.

Avoch

Wrong again, I stopped enjoying it at Christmas, after having played it since launch. I've got other games I play you know, I don't solely rely on an MMO for enjoyment.

I don't see how you don't get bored being wrong all the time when you try poking around in other people's conversations :)

That's a big pile of rubbish you just said there ...

Fact is, pple like Avie think WAR is heaven atm ... The first months that he played WoW, he believed it was heaven aswell. You all really this naïve to believe that WAR (or any MMO) will remain fun non stop etc?

I mean, sure the PVP aspect is better but at some point even that becomes pure routine. Each game has it's target audience. If you want PVE content, you go for WoW because raiding instances is still fun. If you go for PVP fun, your obvious choice is WAR.

I'm not saying WAR is bad or that WoW is better, I'm just saying that some pple need to realise that their current reaction to WAR is exactly the same as 3 years ago, when they first played WoW.

Hence dissing another game sounds incredibly dull if you look at it this way.

Just like Grindcore also said, it's becoming a hype to piss on WoW.

Avie, can't you see it's exactly the opposite?

Whenever they ask a question about WoW, the one being interviewed finds it utter cool to act the rebel and state wow sucks, because he'll score big time with alot of pple that want another MMO, for whatever reason that may be.

While I believe that's fairly cheap, seeing that most MMO'ers played WoW longer then they played any other MMO.

I don't mind pple stating their opinion, but some here seem to use it in every single post they make, allmost bittered and traumatized for life :)

Go read what you have said about every other new mmo. You play it at first, saying it's great, then when people stop playing, you stop playing and start bashing the game, but while people are playing it, you love it. You like to ride in the bandwagon?

Anyways, what I guess I'm trying to say it, your opinion of games fucking suck.

My point is: FA is a gaming community. It'd be nice if you don't piss over the other game(s) that this gaming community (aka your mates) are currently playing.

Otherwise it looks like FA Team 1 vs FA Team 2 ... how retarded would that be aye :)

And Pete, you clearly don't know Avie then if that's your opinion about him.

WoW was a great game, hey it still is to some people. Vanilla WoW set the bar, but unfortunately TBC didn't add as much to the table as some would have hoped for, the game got a bit redundant/grind & farm oriented - but since there wasn't much out there most people kept playing, while others have and always will be content for what it is.
As new games appear in the genre some fail misreably (AoC) while others seem to be doing quite good (WAR) at least at the moment.
I don't hold anything against WoW or the people that still play it and admit to enjoying the game myself for quite a long time, but it's lost its appeal and I'm ready to try something new =), maybe a few months/years from now I'll get tired of WAR and jump onto a new game.. ce la vie ~

I don't really see that what paul barnett said was particulary abusive to wow. He just said that it caters to people who want to bash things. Which in my experience in what wow was all about. Killing mobs or PVE.

I loved wow when it first came out and throughly enjoyed playing it. But for me the end game just requires to much of an investment of time and there's to much pressure to grind this or that piece of gear to get into the next tier of dungeons and rinse and repeat.

I like WAR because it's a game that favours social players. There's no real incentive to spend every waking hour levelling in a desperate attempt to get to 40, because by doing so you basically leave yourself with no one to fight. It's a personal preference thing and if WOW is your bag then more power to you. Why people feel the need to jump to WOW's defense should anyone say that they prefer aspects of another game better is beyond me. and yeah i'm sure WAR like any game will get old eventually and then i'll go out and find something else i enjoy playing.

Yep I agree with that totally, and couldnt have said it any better.

Ive played wow but cant commit the time to playing it anymore, its not my thing anymore besides the fact I work nights all the time now so cant make raid times at all not to mention find the time to prepare and get all the bits and pieces together. So I can pretty much guarantee you wont see me in Azeroth ever again.

I dont agree with the phrase 'the next wow killer' for any game and not just WAR, why does any new game have to kill off WoW, theres plenty of room for both, and whats more a game doesnt have to have a huge amount of subscribers to make it the best game out there, its all personal preference. NC was awesome, and there were about 200 people on a server at any one time.

Well, I can agree with what Uriel said but nonetheless, it seems a hype (which we also see on this board here) to have a bash at WoW just because there's finally something new on the market.

And ofcourse that will be hyped right now and considered "hot". But so was WoW and both the games just encourage a different playing style.

Ohh yes and ... I'm also very bittered that we got to have the yellow color (as forum group) while you guys get the purple epic color ... so unfair :-)
