View Full Version : Anyone know anything about KVM's ?
I have to admit i'm lacking in knowledge in this area somewhat.
I need a KVM or something similar to allow me to use a usb keyboard and mouse on 2 computers. Video switching is not required since my monitor has dual inputs on it anyway so really i just need to be able to switch the keyboard and mouse from one to the other.
Well the KVM boxes I've seen don't do USB because I assume each time you switch between the two computers it would have to sit there and wait for Windows to detect them. Although you can get USB to PS2 converters.
I have a cheap USB KVM...
Since USB human interface controllers are generic, what will happen is the 'keyboard' and 'mouse' will be detected as the KVM, rather than your keyboard and mouse - so there isn't the 'detecting hardware' phase as mentioned above. The one I have is a very simple one, with simply plugs for your keyboard/mouse/monitor and cables to plug into the pc with a button on a box, push the button, it swaps signals over to the other machine, press it again, it swaps it back...
There are slightly more complex ones around where you can use key combinations to do the swapping, etc...
You should be able to grab one of these from Future shop or something
Hang on - just noticed ur in the UK, PC World :)
