Genre

MMORPG hybrid space simulation

Developer

Reakktor Media GMBH

Official Website

http://www.blackprophecy.com/

Setting

Space / Science Fiction / Futuristic

Engine

Gamebyro (pre PhysX, although this may be added by the time the game gets to beta)

Scheduled Release

Previously annouced as Q3 2008 (closed beta), Q1 2009 (open beta)

Background Story

In the 26th century, mankind has expanded across the galaxy, yet only few of its colonies are controlled by Humans. The true rulers are the cybernetically enhanced Tyi and the biogenetically perfected Genides. Their striving for total control over all human species drives them into the territory of an ancient alien race that does not tolerate other cosmic civilisations: the “Restorers”.

To survive this war and uncover the motives of the alien’s destructive behaviour, you are forced to join one of the two dominant human races. Their search for the origin of the Restorers becomes a race for survival of all three human species.

Created in close cooperation with science fiction writer Michael Marrak, the online universe of Black Prophecy lets players jump into countless missions and massive cinematic space battles, to save and sculpt the future of mankind.

Features

Realtime Action - Fighters, carriers and other capital ships engage in space battles of epic proportions, fought out between up to 300 players seeking fame, power, resources and the control over strategically important space stations.

Modular Fighter Construction System - Individually modify and optimise your ship with a vast range of modules, parts and weapons which offer a tremendous number of possible combinations to perfectly match your style of play.

Clan Space Stations - Clans can acquire their own space stations and modify them with new modules and functions to fit their needs.

Innovative Mission System - Play by yourself, in a Clan, or together with a whole fleet to subdue your opponents and uncover secrets of cosmic proportions. Victory and defeat of every battle affects the well-being of your faction and influences the whole game world. Capture precious resources to improve your ship, your space station and the power of your Clan.

Spectacular Audiovisual Presentation - Utilising state-of-the-art graphic technology and a cinematic orchestra soundtrack, Black Prophecy creates a captivating atmosphere unknown to any other MMO.

There is speculation that the ability for multiple players to control portions of ships (movement, weapons, etc) will be a fundamental part of PvP in Black Prophecy.

Other resources

Information from Reakktor regarding 'Black Prophecy' is a little thin on the ground, amongst a hand full of screenshots detailing what is expected to be 'in game' graphics (see attachments) there is also a trailer available.

Character races

Humans
The ever struggling human race, always seeking survival for mankind. Only a few colonies are controlled by humans.

Tyi
Cybernetically enhanced (humans?), also claimed to be the "True Rulers". May be expected to have superior technology compared to the humans.

Genides
Biogenetically perfected (humans?). Both the Tyi and Genides seeks total control over the human race. We dont know if there's any kind of alliance between the two factions.

The Restorers
Ancient alien race that does not tolerate other cosmic civilizations. The Tyi and Genides have been in contact with these aliens (or at least the lead story wants us to believe that this has taken place).

I'm a sucker for space/futuristic games! The graphics are rather nice for a MMO too.

Another point I forgot to mention - It's not meant to be a 'point, click and wait' game (like EVE) but more direct control (like Freelancer) - which is a definite selling point for me

Sorry but aint KK behind this the same bunch of fgs that did NC ? well if so then it will fail tbh

Yes this game is being developed by the same team responsible for Neocron - bare in mind before jumping to conclusions that this is 8 years or more after their initial mistakes with Neocron...

The problems with Neocron are all underlying, ie stuff that couldn't really ever be fixed without a complete re-write of the game...

I'm fairly convinced that it'll lack severely, if it comes out at all... But still would be addictive if anything like NC.

i agree, i just hope they don't get it wrong again

It's not like they got neocron completely wrong. Sure the game had technical problems, which in my opinion was the games greatest problem. The main thing they did wrong though, was listen to the wrong people. They listened to the people that did not like the type of game it was, and wanted it changed. Unfortunately, too many people playing the game, was playing the wrong game for them. So they all complained and that complaining is what doomed the game.

Just look at the types of players that joined, and the amount of people left as they changed it. At the beginning, the majority liked it, they liked the pvp. More carebears joined, they complained, the game changed, more hardcore pvpers left, the lower the player population became. Now it's full of a bunch of pathetic carebears.

pixel
25-10-2008, 12:15
yeah it is... well staying on topic i hope they've got the fundamentals down properly this time, balancing can wait and there are enough reakktor fanboys around to whine about that, as long as the game is stable and looks modern enough as a starter, network code that works will be a must this time around... doesn't matter how well the game is balanced if you can't play it :)

You just described pretty much every mmorpg thats been pvp based.

Including UO. Actually, the above is exactly what happened to UO.

Carebears kill mmorpgs.

yep... its when reakktor listened to the carebears that all the game balancing started getting broken. Back in the day when hybrids and tanks were top of the food chain, and now its spies???

It's tanks and spies, with tanks beeing slightly inferior to spies.

pixel
28-10-2008, 09:49
short of mitigating circumstances, a spy and tank of same skill would nearly always result in said spy with disrupter completely owning the tank.

but anyway, we digress... i just hope reakktor have learnt from their mistakes and black prophecy pulls through as a dark gritty space based mmorpg

Burst weapons need to be looked at in general, they are more powerful/better than single shot weapons in slightly higher TLs, even the stabber is fucked up.
Something needs to be done about the healing light, it does too much ENR damage and not enough 2ndry damage, everyone has good enr resist. it bugs like the creed too.

I havent tried the FL, the ammo for it is way too heavy and if you can use FL you can use the dissy.

I remember when the silent hunter used to do 425 to tanks :(

Yep they certainly do, they're killing Eve-online now fucking fags got thier almost 100% safe zone with concord ships that instantly spawn out of no where and instantly destroy you. So now all the rich carebears who only sit inside highsec can move billions around systems almost completely safe because they cryed and cryed.

pixel
04-11-2008, 15:56
its a sad state of affairs :/

unfortunately too many people like pve and every mmo requires a balance of both pvp and pve in order to remain attractive to both parties, you'll never make both groups happy because both groups want something different from the game

Micky
04-11-2008, 16:01
Which is why I liked Eve because I prefer a sand box type game were its left up to the players but they have recently began to make it more like mainstream stuff...

pixel
04-11-2008, 16:03
unfortunately i believe the problem is simple, the mainstream are casual gamers, and casual gamers like to feel like they're 'automatically' good at something. pve games take the competition out of playing because ur fighting against often terrible ai based enemies, which makes the player feel superior.

with pvp, ur fighting against another real person so the competition is very real, which unfortunately makes many people shy away from a game due to them having to actually be good at it in order to have fun... pvp'ers dont like pve because it isnt a challenge to them, due to pve largely being aimed at casual players

Rocketbox studios has been commissioned for model design:

http://www.rocketbox.de/index_portfolio.php?foo=blackprophecy.php

Task:

creation of 165 spaceship modules,
70 weapons,
5 space stations module systems,
5 level locations,
27 character models (without heads)

vampire
31-12-2008, 13:55
LMFAO those guys designed all the NC2 models..

pixel
02-01-2009, 09:45
indeed :p although obviously the models in NC2 were limited by the game engine, and this time around the engine is a significantly better tried and tested third party solution

I've signed up for this, too, some months ago.
I think part of Neocron's downfall was that sometimes it looked like there are almost no devs anymore. Until the day the lead programmer and probably more left, the game seemed to evolve quite fast and bug fixes came also fast.
Don't know, what made them go, maybe because the missing features like vehicles were finally completed and so their time just ended, maybe the first money exploit scandal that lead to a lot of bad words and an item reset made them leave. ( That was already 2 or 3 months after release. )
But arround that time the development slowed down and in the end I was almost thinking that there are maybe only one or two spare-time programmers left plus a few volunteers of the GM and mod staff, who do some content work.

edit: But at least they seem to love their game, any other company would have shut down the servers long time ago.

The official Black Prophecy web site has received a major overhaul...

...and offers the latest breaking news, screenshots and concept art of our next-generation Space Action MMO "Black Prophecy".

Don’t hesitate and check out the new website right now!

http://www.blackprophecy-game.com/

We are very proud to announce the first Black Prophecy fansites.

“The Prophecy Network (TPN)” has already been founded some time ago by the Tech Haven Network team for the English speaking community. Tech Haven Network was and still is the biggest and most popular Neocron fansite in the net and we are happy to see them continue their great support for our communities.

Hmm, me too.
Damn dxdiag file. I tried to exchange the processor string to something that fits better since my cpu doesn't run on 2x1.8GHz, but currently at 2x2.7GHz, but it didn't get accepted. Don't really know, why, since I copy and pasted it from anyother DXDiag file. Strange.
Don't like that stupid E-something processor string there, because it's technically a Core-2 Duo with reduced 2nd level cache size and runs at that speed, when clocked that way.
Wonder why that XML file didn't get accepted. Had to use the original one.

I'm just curious how they will make the space fighting. If it's like freelancer it will be ok....for ships like frigates, cruisers, interceptors etc.... but when speaking of capital ships....they are mostly stationary...dunno ... something doesn't really add up for me :(

I think they talked about bigger ships being multi crewed like a lot of the vehicles are in their other game neocron, so you will have gunners on cap ships pew pewing people from all angles ^^

Oh, this will be fun.
Reminds me of the times, when vehicles were suffering the sync bug in Neocron. If you were driving from one zone to another with a troup carrier, you lost half of your crew during that 'synch'.

You weren't really faster with a troupcarrier compared to walking, because you always had to wait after a synch to get your passengers back in. That was really funny.
