View Full Version : The Internet
so, after spending my morning sitting on IRC, pretending to do work while in fact doing no work and subsequently regretting it due to the nature of the conversations going on, i have a question;
why is it that the anonymity of the internet causes otherwise normal people to reduce to unsavoury topics of conversations when essentially at both ends of the connection resides a human being?
all of the people involved, when asked, confirmed that they would indeed not discuss such things in real life while sitting with a group of friends, yet once online find it quite normal to discuss these topics, even defending themselves when questioned...
am i just too much of a prude or is the internet fucked up?
your being a prude we discuss much worse things in RL than we do on the internet hell me and twist were having a nice discussion about pissing from the arse the other day
... thanks hinch, lovely image

The internet is also fucked up, though. Pent up individuals certainly sometimes use the anonymity of the internet to let out all their hidden frustrations and dark spastic powers.
4chan's /b/ comes to mind...
what subjects were being discussed then... this is of great importance to decide whether their discussed irl.
the official answer from irc is...
12:38/12 #####-> because the internet gives you the ability to say things you normally couldn't in person due to your personality or whatever
12:38/23 #####-> its easy for some people to be what they see in other people online
12:38/48 #####-> making up for what they feel are their shortcomings by mimmicking the (savage?) behaviour of others who seem to do better than them in social situations
what subjects were being discussed then... this is of great importance to decide whether their discussed irl.
the discussion, to be blatent, was:
in demonoids irc channel: regarding sucking on a horse...
in random channel on quakenet: regarding pornography and how it is "better than sex"
in random channel on quakenet: regarding women and how we should be compliant to the will of men
in random channel on undernet: regarding beastiality
Shockingly, not very different from normal men to men talk...
you have got to be kidding me, i have never witnessed conversations like these in real life...
i would probably spontaneously die if i did
your being a prude we discuss much worse things in RL than we do on the internet hell me and twist were having a nice discussion about pissing from the arse the other day
THAT MADE ME LOLZ :p

So you've never been sitting around with friends and just be like "Why would anyone want to fuck a horse?"
Also, those two girls with that one cup are human beings, look what they did to the cup:(
listen, i've purposely never watched that... i have no idea what happens in it and i do not want to know.

2girls1cup is a perfect demonstration of the human digestive systems final stage :secret:
lol, you've never been on Xbox live i take it? It's pretty bad. People saying it to a group of people they don't know is even worse than typing it out. And yeah 4chan does come into mind. Personally, it bugs the crap out of me because people only do it because they're hiding behind an identity and I've seen alot of these people outside of their identities. Working at an internet cafe and seeing how people interact online as opposed to real life really shows you how pathetic they are. I've met loudmouth trashtalking ventrillo kids who hardly utter a word and wouldn't trash talk you in the same room. I'm not exaggerating.
The internet is too accessible imo
It's just how we're wired up. Social conditioning means we are to fear uncomfortable social situations to protect our own ego. Once you free yourself of your ego and the fact that you don't 'care what anyone thinks' then you could probably have these conversations in real life.
However anyone who could free themselves from their ego and social constructs would 99.99999999% of the time be amazing at socialising and would therefore never think of talking such total shit because, well they just wouldn't want to (they go hand in hand).
The Internet is the best defence for a persons ego (an ego is the image you have of yourself based on interactions and reactions of other people, self-esteem comes from your core and is unphased by all of this). They can't be physically hurt, there's no subcommunication involved, they can just walk away if they want to.
If they said some of the stuff they say in-front of 10 random people in a bar and got the 'who the fuck is this freak' look from all of them, the person would probably have such a strong social fear that they would feel like they're dying.
You make some very good points young man.

I think it's safe to assume I'd get on better with hinch and Twist than pixel. I hate women, anyway.
Anonymity is an absolute gift for sociopaths, introverts and extroverts. Personally I like to use the anonymity it affords me to bring out the worst in other sociopaths, such as those gorts Psycho mentioned on Xbox live. It cracks me up when I do something to sabotage a game and some kid who can't be more than 14 roars that he can't do much when there's some Jewish/Mexican/black guy fucking things up. For the most part I speak and behave on the internet as I do in real life, but when I fancy some comedy, why not indulge myself by wrecking some extroverted, foul-mouthed cocksucker's day?
\o/ northerners do it best tbh
Only when you have witnessed a man with a dirty, dirty Leeds accent say to a lady:

Anyone want to interpret the two girls/cup thing from a postmodern standpoint or suggest the premise for a sequel?
how about two guys and one rabid wolf? *THAT* would be fun.

I completely agree. I don't do much talking online to begin with becaue honestly there are very few places I feel are worth my time. Most of the games I play involve me and 4 other people on LAN, so talking online isn't necessary (Thankfully).
Ah Nin, as always a beacon of hope :)
If you really don't want this conversation getting nasty, you should keep things like that to a minimum.
Anyways, the only real place on the internet that I'm an ass, is on this forum. But that's mainly because of the whole I'm better than you thing in NC and it just transferred to this forum.

Me and 4 of my friends vs. 5 other people online. Trash talk occurs against the other team occassionaly if we utterly rape them. Counter-trash talk on our part though, we never start :p
fairly safe to say me and twist are identical in RL to how we are online (if anything we're slightly worse in RL since talking is faster than typing and waiting for a reply)
I quite agree.

2 girls and 1 dyson vacuum cleaner, it would have to be a brand new one with no dust so we can see the results spinning around.

Not bad, Lil T. Not badadall. That's probably your best, and most level headed post to date.
These conversations are fairly common amongst men, I think. There are some teetotal wankers who even wince at swearage amongst us, but they are few and far between and are routinely outed as homosexuals. Anyway, I'm going to look at porn for a couple of hours.
wanking over pictures of pixel again nish ?
so basically, from what i've gathered... most people on the internet act without morality or reason because they believe all of their actions are without consequence...

faith in humanity has failed.
And just imagine how bitter and venemous you'll be when you turn 30. You lose faith in humanity more and more the older you get, and the bitterness gets so sweet along the way. I can't wait to see how poisonous and angry I become when I turn 35 or 40. It's great. I'll end up getting killed one day, because when I see idiots doing illegal things or just being idiots, I go and tell them, and it's getting progressively worse. Good thing I have the height and weight to my advantage at least. :p
Maybe I'm compensating for something. Maybe deep inside I'm angry because I'd like to be just as big an idiot, but I don't dare. No wait, that's not it. I do have a big temper problem towards idiots, though, that's a blatant admission.

Pardon my bullshit,
...
But I believe a great part of Internet users being morons has to do with precisely the same that has been pointed out in this thread - making up for "real life" action. People (mostly kids/teenagers) create a cool alias for themselves that serves as their alter ego. They go around with that alias everywhere, seeking fame, being nasty, trying to be cool.
It's not comparable to this forum because with a learned eye it's fairly obvious that trolling here is just for the purposes of relieving boredom or trying to make jokes, not trying to be cool. Because if people here were trying to be cool, they wouldn't sound and act like nerds in the first place *cough*.
But yeah, the Internet.. funnily enough, when you beat another team in a [pick your game, football, basketball], they don't seem to think you're somehow "cheating" or "being no-lifers". The normal response is their accepting defeat and shrugging it off, trying to play better the next time.
In some competitive FPS games, in ladder matches or so, all you see after the match is threats and accusations about this guy cheating or "we have demos, you have aimbot, you're fuuuuuucked (repeat 20x)" kind of bullshit. It doesn't have much to do with being good players, you see this attitude from the bottom of the pile players to the very best. There's a large majority acting like shitbags who deserve a kick in the face.
And of all those people, probably 1% would ever say such things to you if they met you on the street, in a shop, you pick it.
Is the Internet evil, or does the evil lie in the silly people contained in the "luxury" of their little computer corner and all the shit their minds can come up with? :>
True, but if you, as I, often judge people too quickly, you'll end up having your prejudices confirmed. 'Speak to the king in someone, and the king will answer', and that sort of thing, but that gets harder and harder. ;)

Right on, grindbox. Paul Theroux refers to people like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as 'mythomaniacs', essentially egomania but with a level of deception involved... you can see exactly this in ordinary people, and all over the internet, but done at a - by comparison - microscopic level. You log onto facebook and you'll see people's status updates telling you if they're in another country or about to go out, seemingly unaware that most people couldn't give a toss. Even if we assume things like this to be truthful, chances are they're just as boring as the next idiot.
That attempt to blur the lines of mundane reality and interesting fabrication really interests me, and is why I love books like Bret Easton Ellis's Lunar Park (where Ellis is the lead character) and shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm. You find yourself wondering if people are really like that or if they're just as dull as the rest of us.
Hahah faceshit as I call it, some people on there make me laugh, I have a facebook account and I just use it to stay in touch with RL friends etc. But some people in my friends list will make updates like "vicky is at home waiting for chris to come home" or "Keven is at the shops" or "ben is watching coronation street". OMG thats SOOO interesting, hey whats for dinner? *pulls retard face*
You get these people on the internet right that can't seperate from reality, there minds are preoccupied with work and shit constant. Those very same people are those that assume you're a real life murder or arsehole because you destroyed some of there pixels on your screen no joke...
People should not take things so seriously.

Spot on. I could rant about this for hours, well, I'd like to say that I don't care but as I'm saying it, I think I do care.
The point is precisely as you described, some "hot shot" celebrities being all over the newspapers. Not because they did something cool that they can be proud of. Not because they accomplished something new.
They're on the news because they were famous due to something at some point in their life, and the media thinks it's really important to keep going on and on about their personal lives which are just the same as any regular person's. In fact, if you were to take a random very successful workaholic businessman/woman as a celebrity, you'd find tons more women/men they've screwed around with, tons more hotels they've slept in (and oh my, maybe they even ordered a breakfast to bed, that's news isn't it?).....and the list goes on and on down to them shitting and the media making it news.
THE FUNNY PART HOWEVER IS
The media consists of business firms and state funded firms. State funded firms, as a rule, don't publicize the above-mentioned shit. That leaves us to business media, which, logically, earns its profits from the customers.
So, the bottom line is,
Who the fuck is stupid enough to care about what Paris Hilton said to her mom in 1997 or what Brad Pitt had for dinner five weeks ago? And, more importantly, who the fuck is stupid enough to pay for it?
That beats all the Internet nerds and freaks, hands down. And "they" call "us" no-lifers...I believe the "no-lifer" response to that is "rofl".
/rant off

Too true, maestro, too true. I've been called/accused of some very bizarre things when going about my business (teamkilling or screwing things up on an industrial scale). I've read some trauma theory, and it doesn't say anything about violent tendencies on online games.
One of my favourite tricks is to join a game with a friend and then I begin being an arse, but he stays undercover as a normal human being. He insults/mocks me etc. leading the others to do the same, before he undermines it all by joining the murder effort.
Today we ran into someone who remembered us from another game buggering stuff up and he still had a chip on his shoulder about it and left the lobby... we worked out that my friend lent his copy of that game to someone else six months ago.

There's something very satisfying about annoying people in games. Right now on valve games I'm sporting a John McCain avatar, and pretending to be a very right wing American semi-racist. It's funny because people try to argue with me about it but I still win the arguement with superior knowledge of world politics. People love Obama, but they can never tell you why. I on the other hand have just finished reading his latest book.

The Goose and I are pros, yo. Teamkilling is just part of the pudding. That alone is divided into the key skills of comedy frags, humiliation and communication. We do it on so many games and so many game modes that we've developed a veritable list of techniques. Our current favourite is the NOOSE mission on GTA. We do a perfect runthrough, pick up Petrovic and then fly him + two people to the Empire State and then break the rotors once we're on top, or almost land and bail just before it goes over the edge.
As for trashtalk, we mainly go for comedy and if we genuinely find someone annoying/offensive we just pursue the vendetta with bullets. We've actually made friends from it, it's ridiculous. Some people actually find it hilarious; I think about half of the Goose's friend list are former victims, maybe a third of mine also.

That's pretty common practice, though. It's the moment of realisation that I'm about to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and do something completely ridiculous to balls things up that I really love. It's beautiful. The time I managed a perfect run I was laughing more or less the whole way through the mission - I jumped out at the end and the helicopter teetered agonisingly slowly over the edge of a building with two angry young men and Kenny in it.

This story reminds me of the time was playing WWIIonline, I went to the german side and proceeded to pickup about 15 - 20 guys in a transport truck. I then drove them to the top of a cliff that overlooks the town we were attacking but I had other plans. We went over the edge of the cliff at full speed and were in the air for a good few second befor we smashed and rolled for several hundred meter. The responce I got was fucking comical and from that day on I realised I enjoyed being a dick in most games I played.
I do like to play games properly but I simply can't resist running people over in a jeep or something, since the game only reports they were killed. Seeing someone smashing over your vehical is pretty funny and this has made the hit and run my favourite tactic.

Developing. This is a thread about people doing stuff on the internet they wouldn't do in real life. I do not fly helicopters into buildings in real life and then insist to the dead passengers that I had priority and that the building should have fucking well given way.
