View Full Version : BMW 135i
Anyone here testdriven one before and share some thoughts on it?
I was going to, but the only local retailer who got one was rather anal about having a long ass waitinglist and only doing testdrives under supervision. :|
i've driven one, their little beasties, comparative to an audi S3 only with the added rwd fun. So yeah i can fully understand they want to supervise testdrives in them.
"1 series, for those of you that can't afford a real bmw"
fairly sure thats their sales tag line isn't it?
Could be, I mean they're the same pricerange as an R32, except they got 56 more hp and RWD instead of 4WD.
Which basicly means that if you can actually drive a car, they are more fun for about the same price.
P.S.: They're basicly a "smaller", cheaper M3.
do not buy a r32, i repeat do NOT, they come close to a m3 performance wise especially the older m3 model, specially with the optional M goodies packs. Their imo the most fun small hatch in that range.
but that begs the question why the fuck would you waste that much money on a bmw and a 1 series of all things they're common as muck anyway every 10 bob millionaire has one :(
if you want something that goes like shit off a shovel for about the same price range get a noble m12 gto 3r
pick them up about 30k 2nd hand oh and 0-60 3.3 seconds :)

Wait, what?
Are you talking about the 135i or the R32 in the last sentence?
And hinch, around here I've yet to see an 135i.
About the Noble, big no-no for me, mainly, because it's a 2-seater, righthand-drive and properbly noone around here knows how to fix that thing if it breaks.
Edit: Btw. 30k € or £?
30k english the 135's are about 38k ish depending on what extras you get added to it.
the noble would be easy to fix everywhere its a mondeo st24 engine just tuned to fuck.
you can get them as left hookers too but never seen one still for what your looking at paying for basically any bmw you can get much better cars for that price range.
as an example in the uk at least its more "exclusive" due to rarety to have a mondeo st series than it is a 3 series. everyone who wants to pretend like they're someone buys a bm of some description the thing is they're all in debt upto their eye balls and can never afford repayments on it anyway.
I don't really care about how "exclusive" my car is, as long as it's a fun, reliable and somewhat practical drive.
Which rules out 2-seaters for me, never really saw any appeal in them.
And seeing as I'm looking for a RWD as my next car that pretty much narrows it down alot over here in germany, pretty much only BMW or Mercedes.
the 1 series is just not fun though :( its quite boring (although not tried the 135 only the 120)
I used to love my old e46 based m3 despite it spending 4 our of 6 months i had it in the garage being repaired due to shit computers inside it. Quite like the new m6 too but way to expensive for what you actually get.
Well, I dislike the standard 1 series aswell, looks like a BMW-made Golf, but seeing as the 135i is a proper coupe and not a hatch that doesn't matter.
And seeing as a 120i only has around 150-170 hp, while the 135i has 306 twin-turbo hp, I think that's quite alot of difference.
So don't judge the awesomeness of the 135i just because pretty much the rest of the 1 series sucks. ;>
it'll still be based on the 1 series chassis and geometery though so i'd be surprised if it handled any different than a standard 1 series
Well seeing as I haven't been able to drive one I can't really comment, but I found this
Critical response has dramatically changed in recent years - the 1-series coupe and convertible have been described as 'returning BMW to its roots', and the 135i has been described as the spiritual successor of the original E30 M3 of the 1980s. Clarkson himself awarded the 2008 model five stars, and had the following to say: 'The 135 coupé is the best car BMW makes.' Generally, the 1 Series coupé is more popular with critics and fans than the hatchback model.
hrmp will have to wait till you've been test drive then and see what you say i would goto my local bmw garage but they don't let people with money in only scum that want finance.

My old E36 is still probably my favourite car I've ever had...too bad it got nicked off the drive whilst uninsured :(
In regards to the 1 series...heard nothing but bad things about them, never driven one myself 'tho, but then again I buy a car with my heart not with my head (within reason), so if I've heard nothing but bad things about a car and I still like it, I'll buy it (Oldskool 6 series and 2.5 V6 vectra ). But the 1 series just doesn't get my dander up...If I was looking for a car in that general area, I'd be inclined to look into an Astra VXR, 147 Ducati or maybe a Focus ST...Used to like the Leon Sports, but they don't do a sport version of the newest Leons :(

Aha, so you should have no problem getting in then ;)

Sadly, No.

I disapprove of anything without a clutch that I operate myself by stepping on it.
You only need a clutch to start the car rolling in a civilized manner :P.
After that you dont need it anymore unless you downshift to first...
Even then im not sure if you still need it. I dont want to try though.
That's why I said "I disapprove" and not "Everyone has to disapprove".
I know that modern technology is making things "better", i.e. faster, but to me a real car has to have a manual gearbox with a clutch, anything else is a car for amateurs who can't drive, like old people and women.

Couldn't agree with this more. For me personally, I love driving, and I love cars. But put in an automatic and instantly I hate driving and would rather be in the passengers seat. Driving an automatic is BORING AS FUCK and is the REASON why old people (like my mom) complain about not wanting to drive - if you had stick you might actually enjoy the experience?
Trictronic or whatever its called sucks too. It's just not the same. No matter how you cut it, you don't have the same control over your vehicle with any sort of automated transmission that you do with a manual.
I do have to admit that I've never driven an automatic, but I just can't think of it as being more fun than a manual in any way.
P.S.: And you also don't have an excuse for 1-handed driving with an automatic.
strange I thought I was the only person that insisted on having a manual or at worst sequential gearbox.
and for some reason I completely can't drive auto's I just manage to stall them.
Actually, all the people I know that are into cars prefer manual over automatic.
I hate automatics as well...
CVT+Peakhorsepowerrpm=win?
automatics are shite to drive, like said before, but paddle gearboxes like the IS-F (yes i've actually driven one for a lap was a demo car from Lexus Europe), just hammer in the clutch INSANELY well. So it's not by FAR as boring as an automatic gearbox, but i'd still prefer a pedal and a sticky thing to it. Specially getting it back in first is shite, and a computer doing the work for you (gas dosage inbetween gears etc) isn't close to working yourself.
